Course structure

The course includes four learning modules and an assessment. The assessment comprises 15 multiple-choice style questions. You need to score at least 80% to pass and you will have a maximum of three attempts. You will be awarded a digital badge on passing the assessment.

Module 1: The climate imperative - why finance is the key

By the end of this module, you will be able to: 
  • explain the increasing economic, social and environmental costs of climate change
  • define climate finance and distinguish it from traditional development finance
  • describe the “investment gap” between climate ambition and available capital
  • recognise the real-world impact of a successful climate finance project.

Module 2: Navigating the climate finance ecosystem

By the end of this module, you will be able to:
  • identify the main actors in the global climate finance ecosystem and describe their respective roles
  • differentiate between various financial instruments used in climate finance, such as grants, loans and equity
  • explain the different sources of climate finance, including public, private, domestic and international flows
  • describe the concept of blended finance and its importance in mobilising capital.

Module 3: Identifying a fundable project idea

By the end of this module, you will be able to:
  • describe the key stages of the climate project development lifecycle
  • explain how to find a project opportunity niche
  • identify common investment criteria used by major climate funds
  • outline six key questions to consider during the project ideation stage.

Module 4: Developing a Project Idea Note

By the end of this module, you will be able to:
  • describe the purpose and key sections of a Project Idea Note
  • prepare for some common challenges when developing a Project Idea Note
  • outline the factors that lead to a successful proposal.
